In a significant leadership transition, Apple Inc. has announced the appointment of Indian American executive Sabih Khan as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO), succeeding Jeff Williams, who is set to retire by the end of 2025. Khan, a 30-year veteran at Apple, will assume the role later this month, marking a pivotal moment for the tech giant as it navigates global challenges and evolving market dynamics.
A Journey from Moradabad to Cupertino
Born in 1966 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, Sabih Khan’s rise to one of the most influential roles in global technology is a testament to his expertise and dedication. Moving to Singapore during his school years, Khan later pursued higher education in the United States, earning dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Before joining Apple in 1995, Khan honed his skills as an applications development engineer and key account technical leader at GE Plastics (now SABIC). His early experience laid the foundation for his remarkable career at Apple, where he has been instrumental in shaping the company’s global supply chain and operational excellence.
Architect of Apple’s Global Supply Chain
Since joining Apple’s procurement group in 1995, Khan has risen through the ranks, becoming Senior Vice President of Operations in 2019. For the past six years, he has overseen Apple’s global supply chain, managing critical functions such as product quality, procurement, manufacturing, logistics, and supplier responsibility programs. His leadership has been pivotal in ensuring Apple products meet stringent quality standards while being delivered efficiently worldwide.
Apple CEO Tim Cook praised Khan’s contributions, stating, “Sabih is a brilliant strategist who has been one of the central architects of Apple’s supply chain. He has helped pioneer new technologies in advanced manufacturing, overseen the expansion of Apple’s manufacturing footprint in the United States, and helped ensure that Apple can be nimble in response to global challenges.” Cook also highlighted Khan’s commitment to sustainability, noting that he has helped reduce Apple’s carbon footprint by more than 60%.
Khan’s expertise has been particularly crucial during challenging times, such as navigating supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheading Apple’s efforts to diversify manufacturing, including expanding operations in India. His Indian heritage and deep understanding of global operations are seen as key strengths as Apple reduces its reliance on China amid shifting trade dynamics.
Jeff Williams’ Legacy and Transition
Jeff Williams, who has served as Apple’s COO since 2015, will step down from the role later this month but will continue to report to Tim Cook, overseeing Apple’s design team, Apple Watch, and health initiatives until his retirement later this year. Williams, who joined Apple in 1998, has been a cornerstone of the company’s success, building a robust global supply chain and leading the development of the Apple Watch.
Reflecting on his tenure, Williams expressed confidence in his successor, saying, “I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Sabih for 27 years, and I think he’s the most talented operations executive on the planet. I have tremendous confidence in Apple’s future under his leadership in this role.”
Williams’ contributions extend beyond operations, as he has played a key role in launching iconic products like the iPhone and iPod while shaping Apple’s health strategy. His transition to overseeing the design team until his retirement underscores his lasting impact on the company.
A Strategic Move for Apple’s Future
Khan’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Apple, as the company faces slowing iPhone sales, potential tariff challenges under the U.S. administration, and the need to adapt to global trade shifts. His deep operational expertise and strategic vision are expected to bolster Apple’s agility and innovation. Analysts have noted that Khan’s leadership will be crucial in maintaining Apple’s competitive edge, particularly as it expands manufacturing in regions like India.
As COO, Khan will serve as the second-in-command to Tim Cook, positioning him as a potential candidate for future leadership roles, including CEO, should Cook step down. This transition reflects Apple’s commitment to continuity and long-term planning, building on the foundation laid by Williams and Cook.
A Milestone for Indian American Leadership
Khan’s elevation to COO is a proud moment for the Indian American community, highlighting the growing influence of Indian-origin executives in global technology. His journey from Moradabad to Cupertino serves as an inspiration, showcasing the impact of dedication, education, and innovation.
