NRI Husband in Canada Accused of Abuse by Wife in Ahmedabad

A woman from Thaltej, Ahmedabad has filed a complaint against her Canada-based NRI husband, alleging physical abuse, dowry harassment, and deceit related to immigration promises. The complaint, registered with city police, includes claims of mental torture and repeated demands for ₹50 lakh.

According to the FIR, the husband allegedly married her under false pretenses, emotionally manipulated her family, and then left for Canada soon after, refusing to support her visa application or maintain regular contact. The woman further claims that she was subjected to threats and financial extortion over a period of months.

While such cases aren’t new, this incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by women in cross-border marriages—particularly when legal, emotional, and financial exploitation cross national boundaries.

This case is part of a broader pattern of NRI marital disputes, where one partner—often the wife—is left behind in India with limited legal or financial recourse. NRIs involved in international marriages must understand the serious legal and ethical responsibilities tied to immigration and cross-border relationships. These incidents also reflect poorly on diaspora reputation abroad and can lead to tougher scrutiny in visa and marriage approval processes.

Legal experts urge NRIs to ensure full transparency and ethical conduct in marital arrangements to avoid severe consequences under Indian and international law.

With cases of abandonment and abuse on the rise in NRI marriages, legal and consular bodies in India have begun tightening oversight on international matrimonial filings. NRIs are encouraged to maintain documented communication and mutual consent in immigration and financial matters to protect both parties.
